Addicted to Happy: How I forced myself to be happy for a year anytime.

Everyone just wants to be happy at some point in their lives.
I was always a happy child, at least as far as I can remember. I grew up very poor in a small island in southeast Asia. My mother who was the breadwinner of the family had to work various odd jobs just to be able to put food on the table to feed me and my siblings and keep a roof over our little heads.
Life was quite tough and of course I never really had any cool toys as a child. The main satisfaction that I got as a child was playing with neighbors and close friends, flying my kite (built out of plastics, strings and twigs) and rolling a bicycle tire down a hill with a stick (I swear it was really fun).
Aside from the constant beatings that I get from my mom after returning home with mud and crap all over my clothes, life was good. I learned to wear various multiple types of clothing at once, so that the whippings don’t have much of an effect. See, humans really do adapt to their environment and I learned quickly as a child.
But if you ask me now if I grew up a happy child, I can tell you without a doubt that I was the happiest and luckiest kid in the world. Growing up poor I never really felt that I lack anything instead I was content with what little I had at that present moment, although I never had much.
I never felt like I missed out on anything, even though I was always hungry and spam and eggs were considered a special treat for breakfast (there is no better combination than that in my opinion). There was always a feeling of ease, contentment, leisure and comfort with what little I have, that comes with living a simple lifestyle that you can’t get anywhere else, especially living here in America of course.

Luckily all of my mom`s hard work paid off and she was able to bring me and my siblings to this wonderful country called America. It was a really difficult life at first but thankfully we were able to adapt to the circumstances in front of us, and was given the chance to be able to live the American dream.
Fast forward to the present me, living and thriving here in America. There is so much abundance, so much to accumulate… so much things and of course so much clutter. The first few days when I arrived in this country, I devoured and gorged all of the food my eyes could see. I gained about half a ton of weight which was a good thing since I was a very malnourished kid.
As I visited the city, I was awe by the buildings, the streets, the cars, the way people dress and carry themselves and of course the accumulation of having plenty of “stuff.” There was so much cool things to have and plenty more to buy, that’s if you have the money of course.
But as months and years go by assimilating to the American culture, I began to feel that people that I know close to me, always had a feeling of “lack.” They had all the healthy and nutritious food in the world available to them, yet they are addicted to fast food, candies and chocolates while watching their favorite sitcom or surfing the web (the great American pastime).
They also seemed to work a lot of hours in order to pay for the superfluous things that they acquire and the majority hated their jobs and as a result seemed very unhappy and sometimes, quite mean.
Even the kids with their ipads and iphones are still sad and unhappy for not having the latest and newest version. And others lined up for blocks on end, camping overnight just to get the latest model, (thanks Apple and Steve Jobs for your brilliant marketing). After years of being surrounded by very unhappy people I came up with a disposition. I Eventually realized that the American people are not a happy bunch of folks at all.
Here in the Western world it seems that it’s never enough, we are always trying to achieve that “American Dream,” or acquire the newest “thing” because that’s what Americans do, and that is what society excepts of us. Of course it is after all a “consumerist” society, but just look around… and you can see that the majority of the people are obese, unhappy and addicted to “stuff”.
There seemed to be no sign of contentment in a lot of Americans, with the majority of the population having the mainstream idea of working day and night in order to “slave” and pay for “the next big thing.”
Consumerism has become a religion, and everyone is worshipping the same religion no matter their circumstances are in life… be it rich or poor.
During one of my great long hikes along one of the biggest state parks within where I lived in upstate New York called Bear Mountain State Park. I had quite an enlightened experience. I usually would go there for the day for a brisk walk and at times to get away from the stressful environment at work.
Nature walks and trails has long been my redemption from the insanity of the modern life. The day at the office started out as a long and frustrating day. Arguments and fights with co workers over ongoing projects seemed unending and became an emotional drain.
It’s a fact of life that egos can clash especially during in times of stress and disagreements. And instead of arguing with someone who will never listen or understand my plight, I just left. At some point someone needs to walk away.
It wasn’t until I was able to gain full control of my emotions after a long walk that I ultimately realized that it was my own perception and negative response that was causing the root of my frustrations. It was my own thoughts that shaped and structured my life and cause any suffering that I experienced.
That it was my own emotional response that retract or attract the conflict that is in front of me, and it all made perfect sense. And I was enlightened by that fact that I have realized, that we are all responsible for our own happiness or sadness.
There used to be an old Cherokee story that goes like this:
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
Here is the same story, but it is called “Grandfather Tells” which is also known as “The Wolves Within”
An old Grandfather said to his grandson, who came to him with anger at a friend who had done him an injustice, “Let me tell you a story.
I too, at times, have felt a great hate for those that have taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do.
But hate wears you down, and does not hurt your enemy. It is like taking poison and wishing your enemy would die. I have struggled with these feelings many times.” He continued, “It is as if there are two wolves inside me.
One is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him, and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fight when it is right to do so, and in the right way.
But the other wolf, ah! He is full of anger. The littlest thing will set him into a fit of temper. He fights everyone, all the time, for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is helpless anger,for his anger will change nothing.
Sometimes, it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit.”
The boy looked intently into his Grandfather’s eyes and asked, “Which one wins, Grandfather?”
The Grandfather smiled and quietly said, “The one I feed.”
It’s nobody’s job to make us happy or create the life we want for ourselves. There’s nobody else we can blame, not our parents, not society and not that guy or gal who broke our heart in the past or way back in 8th grade.
It’s our own responsibility to make sure that our life is worth living. It’s our responsibility to be aware, become conscious and take care of our “own” happiness in this lifetime. The one and only lifetime that we have.
For the majority of my adult life here in America, I had become a part of this overworked capitalist society. My definition of success had change and I had believed that reaching that American dream was the only thing that could bring me happiness and joy.
I worked hard and got high honors in high school. Got a good scholarship to attend a really good University and graduated with a bachelors degree in science. Got a job and started from the bottom, and eventually with enough persistence became one of the head coordinator and a respected manager in my company.
With hard work comes the raises and benefits that gave some financial security to my future. My wants and urges filled with materialistic and egotistical endeavors were all met. I thought that after I had achieved what I wanted, then fulfillment would soon follow. But boy was I completely wrong.
Eventually I realized that I was chasing happiness, and was losing the game of life. And that’s not a very smart thing to do since we become the silly dog chasing its own tail. The game of life as we knew it growing up has been hacked, and the rules were not always meant to benefit you and I. It was built to profit the few and take away from the majority.
The choice of feeling happy anytime and anywhere is within our thoughts and our minds. Having the newest model of Iphone or laptop brought temporary joy that didn’t last very long. Especially after spending so much money for a piece of gadget, then we have to work more hours to compensate for the cost.
Only a few enlightened beings have realized that happiness was always there with us in the present moment. We just have to make the shift ourselves and choose to see and become aware of it. When you’re at the very beginning of the journey to creating a life you love, things can get overwhelming pretty quickly.
Once you’ve taken responsibility for your life it’s easy to start blaming yourself. Before coming to America, as a child I always thought that the American population especially the American children must be happy all the time. Yet even with all of the toys and gadgets, it was a different story in reality.
Base on plenty of case studies, Americans are actually one of the unhappiest people on earth. We beat ourselves up and try to force ourselves to work harder, because we feel like a complete failure the minute we stop working. We are always worried about being judged by society.
Work has becoming the main priority in our lives because we need the money to buy stuff that we necessarily don’t need. Let’s face it, we are all addicted to something, yes… you and me.
Some are addicted to stuff and money, others to love while others are addicted to hate, while others is in search for their next new addiction. Lets sit back and take a look at the anatomy of an addiction and see what this entails.
Within the context of Wikipedia and the interwebs, Addiction is defined as a continued repetition of a behavior despite adverse consequences, or a neurological impairment leading to such behaviors.
In this present society addiction is usually connected to something of a more negative aspect. When we mention the word addict, it is usually in relation to a person using an illegal substance and living an unhealthy or illicit lifestyle.
In this present society addiction has plenty of negative connotations. You might know someone or have a family member that is addicted to a certain drug or substance that has negative effects on their mind and body.
Addiction has ruined people’s lives and has destroyed families and relationships. But I wondered what if we are able to program ourselves to become addicted to the positive and good yet simple things in life.
Wouldn’t that make everything in this world worthwhile. What if we are able to teach ourselves to become addicted to the positive aspects of life that not only benefits ourselves but also the rest of humanity and the world.
Then everyone wins… and recently that has become my ultimate goal. I was obsessed with finding the key to unlock happiness within myself and eventually help others.
It is not very hard to understand how people become addicted to something. It has been said that certain habits and patterns associated with addiction are typically characterized by an immediate gratification (short-term reward), coupled with delayed deleterious effects (long-term costs).
In the physiological level addiction gets a hold of a person’s mind and is able to control his urges. Addiction exerts a long and powerful influence on the brain that manifests in three distinct ways: craving for the object of addiction, loss of control over its use, and continuing involvement with it despite adverse consequences.
Addiction affects the way we think, in a more deeper neural and cellular level. For many years, experts believed that only alcohol and powerful drugs could cause addiction.
Neuroimaging technologies and more recent research, however, have shown that certain pleasurable activities, such as gambling, shopping, and sex, can also co-opt the brain towards addiction.
When I lived in New Jersey several years ago, I met a guy who became a close friend of mine who was eventually diagnosed with a kleptomaniac disorder. It’s a mental disease that involves taking other people’s stuff.
The guys was basically obsessed and “addicted” with taking and stealing other people’s stuff. The poor guy was trapped by his own mental incapacity and could not control his urges. I am glad to say that he is not my friend now, obviously it was just such a toxic relationship, and it was not fun having stuff in my place disappearing everytime he visits.
In this current new capitalistic world we have shifted to a different time in which we are addicted to mainly monetary and materialistic success. Success can mean different things to various people but people know that it usually means monetary achievement and acquiring plenty of nice things, a big house and few sporty cars.
For me personally, my definition of success involves having the time to do things that I love to do and passionate about all the while also having a close loving relationship with the people that I cared for. A simple yet fulfilled and a passionate life is a happy one in my book.
Having a healthy body, mind and spirit is beneficial for my own personal journey towards success in life, therefore it has also became my main priority. Without our optimum physical health, then we can’t continue to pursue our passions and purpose in this life nor can we continue to support and provide for our families and loved ones.
For Arianna Huffington who has sold Huffington post for more that 300 million dollars to AOL, it took an exhaustion-induced collapse in her Los Angeles office for her to see that there needed something to be done with her health-work relationship.
She had been running The Huffington Post for two years and was working 18 hour days and while she was clearly successful by most metrics such as the fame and money yet, her physical health was all going downhill.
“I was successful by all standards, but I was clearly not successful if I was lying in a pool of blood in the floor of my office,” Huffington said, recalling the tumble that left her with a broken cheekbone (that sounds quite painful).
Is it really true that money is a big factor in a having a fulfilled and happy life? Have you ever noticed that no matter how much money you seem to make… there is never enough. Look at all these celebrities and sports stars that have achieved a significant amount of monetary success, yet are still hooked on illicit drugs and becoming depressed and then eventually going bankrupt.
The more money we make the more “stuff” there is out there to buy, even though we have already overspent the money we have. Many people feel that they deserve to “treat” themselves to expensive and luxurious items or spend money they don’t have on living a lifestyle they have yet to earn.

They charge these “rewards” on a credit card or what I call a “debt” card. But there are costs for borrowing money, besides the fees and the interest, you experience the stress of being and a slave to debt.
All the commercials and the infomercials unpretentiously reshaping our wants and needs around materials and useless electronics, that we become shopaholic zombies feeding off from the next “cool” best thing.
The world is a crazy place and when the human nature and existence of the ego is added with technology then a lot of things can go wrong. There are just too many online shopping hotspots nowadays and tons of social media out there. And with that privilege comes with it the option to misuse and abuse these tools.
Notice how everyone on facebook is hungry for your attention and try there hardest to impress everyone even if they look “pretentious” in other people’s eyes. We all can see this everyday. Hopefully you don’t fall on this category ; )
This is seldom how envy, jealousy and the misconception of not having or being “enough” comes into play. Many of us do this, but if you get into the mindset of thinking about what you *could* be doing, you’ll never be happy doing what you actually *are* doing.
It is in our human nature and ego to try to compensate for things, achievements and beauty that we think we may have lacked. You’ll always try to compare what you’re doing with what other people (on Facebook and Twitter, perhaps?) are doing. You’ll wish your life were better. You’ll never be satisfied, because there’s *always* something better to do out there. There is always a longing for getting the next and newest gadget and there is always the fear of missing out on something.
It is our character to want to assimilate within the community, and that means conforming to the majority and especially to the media (both web and television). I think Its a sad state, when the media and television dictates what is essential and why “something” is necessary or lacking in our lives.
But for me personally, I believe that it takes plenty of awareness and consciousness and a strong will to live a life filled with passion and purpose.
I have slowly adopted the mindset that whatever I’m doing right now is enough and that my life is awesome the way it is right now.
If I’m walking outside, enjoying nature and the fresh air, that’s beautiful. There’s nothing I’m ever doing that isn’t the most incredible thing on Earth. I have taught myself to build gratitude and be thankful for all the small and even the tiniest things in my everyday life.
If I’m doing something that I end up really hating, maybe that’s an invaluable life lesson. Everything in life is a learning process and a journey of self correction. If I’m with someone boring or obnoxious, it’s a lesson in patience, or empathy, or in learning to understand people better.
Life has been really good to me and has allowed me to make a living off something that I enjoy doing. Before being a full time writer, I was a typical paid worker living the rat race life working nine to ten hours a day inside a small cubicle. Eventually with enough hard work and competitive spirit… years later, I became the head coordinator and top manager of my company.
I thought I had made it, and have reached the almighty American dream. A successful immigrant in the greatest country in the world. But yet I was not happy there was something missing in my life’s equation.
I was unhappy, and the cycle of working long hours day in and day out has took a toll on my psyche. It was draining and it was exhausting just even thinking about it. Pursuing my dream and becoming a writer opened up my creative side and enabled me to live fully my purpose with zest and passion.

I’m generally content with whoever I’m with, in light of the fact that I figure out how to see the flawlessness in every individual”.
My contentment in life allows me to be happy and feel joy that has no price.
Of course, Life is not always sunshine and rainbows. Life will suck on the off chance that you are continually longing you’re doing something else that you do not enjoy. Life will shake you off in the chance that you understand you’re not doing the best thing. Life is unpredictable and with unpredictability comes with it a high level of uncertainty and anxiety.
When I decided to quit my job and send in my two weeks notice to my CEO which has became a close friend over time, I was devastated and scared shitless. All of my closest friends and family members were confused and bewildered by the decision that I was about to make. They said I was too young and too reckless to let it all go, they did not understand what I was doing.
First, I downsized my life and sold or give away all of the belongings and “stuff” that I knew would not give me enough value or bring any happiness in my life.
My goal in life has always been just to have enough sustainable passive income so I can spend the rest of my time doing things that I truly love to do and spending it with the ones that I love. I have decided that I want to spend my days waking up and pursuing my passions as my daily endeavor.
For me, time is one of the biggest factor in living a fulfilling life. It is very important to invest time with those people that you adore and to the ones that you love. So go out there and make your loved ones a priority in your life, today.
Investing time with the individuals you cherish is greatly vital to your personal happiness and momentous joy. But then its unbelievable how regularly we do the exact inverse, and invest time alone, or disengaged from those we adore, or invest time with individuals we don’t much like. Life is short my friend, go out there and reach your dreams.
Make it a necessity to really find the time to spend with the individuals you adore. Make that your most imperative thing of the day. In order for this to happen, you need to be able to invest the time.
Follow your passion in life and do the things that you cherish and make you genuinely happy. What do you adore doing most, what makes you smile and make your heart skip ones in a blue moon. What are the things that put you in the zone and complete focus.
It’s very important to step back and look at your life from all different angles. Evaluate the 4-5 things you cherish doing most in life, the things that make you happiest, and make those a priority.
For me, the things I cherish doing are: investing time with my family, writing and composition, biking, and running. I do those things consistently, and it brings me plenty of joy everytime. It may take some brief time and dedication to get your life down to your essentials like I have, however its value is worth all the hard work.
Growing up, I was very unfortunate to be surrounded by people who had plenty of negative outlook on life. Especially my parents, which seemed to have a very negative view on plenty of things. They grew up very poor, therefore they are very skeptical about things and life in general.
As a result when i became an adult, I myself developed the same negative mindset. It wasn’t until I realized how destructive it was that I started to change my habits. I realized how important it is to be able to concentrate on the great, positive and productive things in life.
The mind is a very powerful tool and has the ability to shift our moods and emotions. Everybody’s life has positive and negative angles whether you’re joyful or not depends to a great extent on which perspectives you concentrate on. The mind is a thinker and is also a creator.
I believe that just about everything in life has a positive side, and concentrating on the positives have all the effect of producing a happy and joyful life. Remember to remind yourself to invest more of an opportunity with the positive individuals that you adore, remember that happiness is contagious and being surrounded by happy and enlightened beings is the quickest way to being joyful.
I always knew that it is very important for me to really enjoy my work and love the things that I do everyday. I am very privileged and lucky to be able to make a living of something that I love to do.
And I would not trade what I do for money or for anything else. My freedom is very precious to me, and it’s this zest for life and new things that keeps me going.
I believe that everyone should do work that they cherish and love. An amplification, obviously, of doing the things you cherish, results in having a fulfilled and happy life. Even better is the ability to leverage and connect your work with your passions. The purest definition of getting paid to do something that you love.
This new generation has allowed us to easily make a living through our passions and the things that we love. At that point we are the lucky ones, and you ought to acknowledge how lucky you are. Yet we are an ungrateful and a depressed generation.

Motivation is a big factor in doing and creating great things in this lifetime. There are times when I’m working on a big project and I get halfway through when I run out of steam. I’ve lost the motivation.
This is the point when I take a break and try to realign my needs and goals. If I find myself wondering why I’m working my butt off, then I’m the one creating this doubt.
Maybe I want to find a new job or start my own business because I’m not receiving the gratitude that I feel I deserve. Whatever the reason for my doubt, I have to internally talk through these feelings. Of course I can talk through these problems with someone else, but it’s best to rely on myself first.
Once you figure out what your underlying needs are that aren’t being met, you can either let go of them and try to motivate yourself or take action to make a change.
For example, maybe I want to become a better writer, get more organized, and lose 10 pounds. I try to attach these needs to my work. Trying to become a better writer is easy to attach to my needs since I have to write for the program I am building.
I have realized that being organized and being clutter free has been a great asset in life. Trying to become more organized is a little more difficult. I usually choose the obvious path and take fifteen minutes to straighten my desk.
This helps me clear my head, feel positive about my surroundings and get back to the task at hand. Trying to lose 10 pounds is the most difficult to connect with my work. A little creativity is a must.
I try to create a reward system that is essential for being consistent. Every time I finished writing one page, I would do 15 push-ups. This keeps me feeling positive about my writing accomplishments and my body. If you are going to kick start your motivation, you need to find a way that your current work is helping out the future you.
Try and look at the good things in life. Try to review the good and the positive things in life. I often get too caught up in how the present moment makes me feel. I create a negative thought process by magnifying the bad things that are happening to me at my job instead of focusing on all the good things that are there if I just take the time to notice them.
Managing stress, implementing big projects, writing clear emails, developing my social skills and all the other interactions that I have force me to become a better person.
I am getting paid to learn life’s lessons and share and teach it to the world. That’s a gift. By shifting my perspective to the positive, I’m able to let go of my negative thinking cycle and realign myself with the good things in my life.
